Good Neighbours Is The Watchword In Kirkshaws

Residents of Douglas Gardens Development in Kirkshaws turned out in huge numbers to attend their first Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.   The meeting was held in the nearby Neighbourhood Centre.   Douglas Gardens Development is made up of 90 houses, which nestles between the M8 and Kirkshaws Road.

The Chairman Liz Dawson said:

“We had an extremely successful meeting with many residents present.  This is a comparatively new community.  We take care of our families, homes, and the environment.  We are all proud to be associated with this new initiative.  It was greatly encouraging to be supported by representatives from the Police, Scottish Neighbourhood Watches, and our local MP Tom Clarke”.

Liz continued:

“Although the Scheme’s Start Up stems from crime in the neighbourhood, we believe we can turn things round positively and make a real difference to the quality and safety of everyone young and old who lives in our community.  The most heartening feature of the evening was establishing a warm and friendly Community Spirit amongst the all the residents.  Our aim is to channel and harness that energy by adopting a proactive approach to the problems we have been experiencing.   At the forefront of our minds is the clear objective of ensuring that every child living here does so in an atmosphere that compliments their well being and development”.

Tom Clarke MP said:

“It was a pleasure to be invited to the meeting.  It was clear to me that these residents are determined not to have the quality of their lives blighted by criminal activity, and quite right too.  The residents have taken a strong and positive lead, supported by the Police.   The guidance offered by the Scottish Association will be invaluable in the early days of this new scheme.  Let the message go out that Residents of Douglas Gardens Development in Kirkshaws are well organised and supported by the relevant authorities.  From here on there will be new preventative measures in place designed to avoid crime, and make their community safe for children and adults.  These residents are good people who want to promote good citizenship and community spirit, and I am proud to be associated with this new project.  Indeed I think many other communities would be well advised to look upon this community as model for crime prevention”.
